The raccoons spent a lot of time standing tall throughout the night. Then a coyote passed through - so maybe they knew it was in the area. Then the pregnant possum checked things out.

An eventful night.
An eventful night. Late afternoon, the mother and cubs were playing in the back - then they fed, and the mother kept a watchful eye on them. A pass through visit from a deer and a possum is building a new nest some-where. Carrying leaves with its tail.

Collective noun for raccoons ......
The collective noun for raccoons is either a "gaze" or a "nursery". Last night the nursery would have been the best collective noun to describe the gathering at the seed trays!!!

I know some don't like snakes, but yesterday I was out front and noticed something different in the fountain. Looked closer and found a snake partly in the water to stay cool. Eventually it decided it had had enough of me and moved away - to the bush by the fountain - where it must live. it was about 5 feet long - pretty big for a rat snake!!!!!

A cub race to the seed and a crowd overnight
The two cubs were out early and racing to the seed trays - which had been full the previous afternoon, but were empty. Later, with a crowd (7 cubs) at the trays you can see why they want to get in early!!!!

Evening cubs and morning deer
This little raccoon has me well trained - waits for me to bring out food and rewards me by standing close. Then the family of four cubs came out and visited the seed tray in the early evening. Finally, we had a morning visit from a deer.

Raccoon behavior and Pileated Woodpeckers
This is a great example of raccoon submissive behavior. The female lies on her back, then slowly and backwards, approaches the food trays. Then they both eat. The male at the food trays is the one that has me trained to put food out during the day.

A close-up of the racoon that has me trained, and some shots of the pileated woodpeckers in the backyard.
